Alumni Lecture - October 2009

Wrestling with an invisible enemy, atom by atom

On 5th October 2009 I gave a lecture to a group of College Alumni who have given generously to the College and continue to take an interest in the research that is going on at Imperial. I used the opportunity to give what I hope is a pretty accessible account of our work on the structure of the 3C protease from foot-and-mouth disease virus. More detailed information can be found here or by consulting our publications.

The rector, Professor Sir Roy Anderson, gives a brief introduction. The lecture itself starts about 8 minutes in. I'm afraid I did go on a bit — the lecture lasts about 70 minutes — but it's a gripping story! The video is intercut with the slides that I showed which I hope makes it accessible to most viewers.

The movie is was prepared with Quicktime and should play within most modern browsers. You can obtain the Quicktime plugin for free from Apple for Mac or PC platforms. Alternative file formats are available via the College Website.
